-ATCBB Studio Update #2

Days 10-12 (photos)

Days 10-12

Day 10, 11 & 12 Tension Tamer

As days fade into weeks here at “The Dark” ideas, bleed into songs and become something real to all of us. It’s amazing to watch our riffs be placed into Matt’s hands and have him smash it and mold it into an actual song. Shit’s awesome.

As guitars are being knocked out and songs are coming together, the riffs were sounding mean as hell, but they needed something. Enter Shawn Marquis and his bass of death! I don’t know how many people know this, but Shawn SHREDS the bass, dude owns it. And let me tell you he filled these songs up with low end rage.

While the riffs have been bleeding out of guitars and the low end is pounding, Davey has been sitting in a room writing his ass off, and finally it was time for him to step up. The whole concept of this record, which Davey has been pouring himself into, is really coming full circle as he belts out line after line, it gets meaner and meaner. I don’t know if people are ready for the monster that is Davey Muise. Now, every dark has it’s light, every day has it’s night, so to compliment those beast vocals, there is the soulful voice of Evan Pharmakis. As he approached the microphone, we all knew it was going to sound heavenly, but yet again in keeping with this theme of being blown away by each other, Evan belted out choruses and melodies that we’ve never heard from him. Needless to say, it will be music to your ears!

So to recap…

Riffs- heavy

Bass- earthmoving

Vocals- MEAN, and soulful

Sounds good to us.

Day 8 & 9

Day 8 & 9 Blurs

Days more often then not bleed into each other for us here at Glow in the Dark. Our sleeping schedules have completely shifted to the point where we lose track of hours, lose track of surroundings, just plain lose track of anything but this record. So in keeping with our testament of this process, you all get two days into one, cause honestly, thats how we are living. Days bleeding into days.

As you may recall Chris finished half the record and was on a break from tracking as Nick and Evan started shredfest 2011 in with Matt. Well, just as Chris was getting use to sweatpants and movies…we had to send the boys guitars out for a quick tune up, for about 2 days, just enough time to track the second half od the drums tracks…sorry Chris.

So back into the recording room went Chris and Matt. Now seeing how much Chris had previously tracked, he surely was tired and slow right?! Exactly the opposite, it felt like every few hours he’d pop out for a signature coffee and coke zero and yell, “GOT ANOTHER ONE DONE!” If there was a question about it before, its surely confirmed now, Chris Campbell is a robot from planet Drumland, here to track the shit out of drums.

This whole time the band noticed Davey hadn’t emerged much, upon opening the door to his “lead singer room” (Thanks Chris) you could tell why. Room dim, headphones on with the blinding light of a computer screen and a constant flow of coffee and “herbs”, Davey has gone into a writing frenzy stopped only by pee breaks, more coffee and the occasional sandwich. We’ll just let him be for now.

Like we said before, going crazy, diving into ourselves, for the sake of making one hell of a record. THAT’S what its about.

Day 7

Day 7- Dude, press space bar

The nightly ritual of jamming tunes in the studio has finally come to a pay off, today we start tracking guitars, and Ev and Nick are ready to let lose on these tracks.

Chris is taking it easy for a bit, sleeping in and trying to relax cause he earned it , banging out 5 songs on the drums already. In my opinion he’s been really pushing him self and the drums sound HUGE.

Nick and Matt really dove in to getting a super full tone. Trying to figure out how to bring in more presence and an over all rock and roll, rather than a super metal vibe. Matt’s got plenty of frankensteined heads and amps to choose from. Nick went with a vintage JCM800 with a Tube Screamer and his LTD Viper AND an old SG thats been gutted out and has NO VOLUME KNOB, so it’s always at 10, It’s been dubbed the “Wild Stallion”. Fuck yes.

…and thats just for the first track.

Our vision for this record has always been the same, but new elements come into play everyday, and honestly, it rules.

So for you guitar/tech/tone fiends out there…

…Guitars will be: Heavy, loud, offensive and rock and roll.

Nice.
